Poverty of Spirit

SCRIPTURE: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 NIV

THOUGHT: For just a minute could we just normalize brokenness? Instead of normalizing gender on a spectrum, or normalizing teaching children about sexuality in kindergarten, disrespect of country, parents as terrorists, mind-altering drugs, technology as appendage, or about a million other attempts to normalize what isn’t, let’s talk about brokenness.

I’m not suggesting we celebrate brokenness, I’m suggesting we normalize it – and there’s a big difference. Celebrating your brokenness is like putting a smiley face on the mirror so you can’t see your face. It’s a game, not reality. I’m advocating that people take a look at whatever is leaking out of them and become poor in spirit, willing to admit to brokenness and the need for God’s work, God’s rule, God’s will, God’s ideas about human flourishing. To become poor in your own spirit and open to the work of God’s Spirit is to become rich in what people are really seeking: life. And real life – starting now and going on forever in the kingdom of heaven – is something worth celebrating.

So let’s just get over it. Let’s stop wasting energy on pretending and use it instead to press on toward real life, defined by the one who gave it to us.

PRAYER: Oh God, you’ve invited us to choose life but the path of life down here is littered with the brokenness of being human. Help us be okay with that and move on, welcoming poverty of spirit to make room for more of your Spirit.
