SCRIPTURE: He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30 ESV
THOUGHT: Life has a way of humbling you. If you’re young and haven’t discovered that yet, just hang on. I say it’s life, and yet, as a Christian, I know there are at least two other things at work. 1) God has a stake in humbling us — not humiliating us — humbling us, a vast difference. His work is masterful. Without condemnation. Full of love and compassion, just as he described himself to Moses so long ago. 2) God’s purposes in humbling us are to remake us, or perhaps reveal who we are according to the way he made us, digging away at the rubble left behind by our previous way of living, or chipping away at the stone around our hearts.
To steal an 1882 phrase from a much-loved carol, his will is to fit us for heaven to live with him there. Oh that seemed like such an innocent little song until I realized I’d been pleading with God to do his work all my life.
So if life seems humbling to you right now, at least stop and wonder how God is at work. Is the decrease in you making room for an increase of him?
PRAYER: Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care and fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.
