SCRIPTURE: If only there were someone to mediate between us, someone to bring us together, someone to remove God’s rod from me, so that his terror would frighten me no more. Job 9:33-34
THOUGHT: Imagine going into a courtroom, frightened, lonely, and wondering how in the world it has come to this. Maybe you’ve been injured in an accident or betrayed by a business associate. Maybe it’s because a divorce is tearing your life apart, or something still worse. It’s as if you are living two realities—on the one hand, going through the motions to stay alive, on the other, wishing you could escape the courtroom because your reality is so painful. There is terror all around.
The longing for a powerful mediator to stand between us and the things we fear is visceral. We desperately want someone, strong and unassailable, to fight for us when life has fallen apart and we don’t know why or what to do to make it right.
Job’s longings for a mediator remind me of John’s descriptions of the Advocate (Jn. 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7, 1 Jn. 2:1), and I can’t help but think that the plan in the Father’s heart for a son to be born, die to take our punishment, live again to make intercession, and leave us with his Spirit as an advocate was strengthened as God watched Job’s suffering. He knew Job’s heart, he knew Job’s story, and he knows ours.
Simply put, we need help, day in, day out. Someone to mediate between us and a holy God, and advocate for us against our enemy. A powerful presence able to restore peace, and assure us that we are valuable enough to fight for.
PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for the Son and the Spirit, the advocates Job longed for, the powerful voices we have access to 24-7-365.
