SCRIPTURE: You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face. Job 1:10-11 ESV
THOUGHT: I give up reading the fine print on my phone almost instantly. Like a bad boxer, I go down before the first hit. I love language, but legalese is barely coherent; common sense says the writers have me coming and going, so I may as well tap out, check the box, and get it over with if I want the service.
An expert in fine print, the accuser we meet in the story of Job has a goal: use words that confuse and put distance between God and his beloved children, questioning God’s intentions, pointing out our imperfections. The accuser is a lawyer, and legalese is a livelihood. He is smart, ruthless, and knows God’s law inside and out.
The point is not that we need to power up to engage with the accuser, but that we have a court-appointed defense attorney sitting beside the Judge, who literally lives to intercede. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, despising its shame—willingly moving toward death for the joy of resurrection, sitting beside God, and arguing on our behalf against the accuser! His blood speaks a better word, and, by faith, we are relieved of the burden of wading through the legalese meant to confuse and destroy.
PRAYER: Oh Mediator and Intercessor, speak truth into any lies I encounter or confusion that confronts. I am so thankful for a perfect intercessor who lives to win against the accuser of my soul.
