Read Luke 1:46-55
For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (v. 49)
Biblical characters are as apt as musical theater greats to break into song when the narrative calls for it. Moses, Aaron, and Miriam sing as the waters of the Red Sea subside (Exodus 15). David sings and dances when the ark of the Lord returns home (2 Samuel 6), and is the writer of hundreds of songs that help us remember who God is and what God has done. His son, Solomon is credited with 1,005 songs (1 Kings 4). Paul encourages the early church to sing songs, hymns, and spiritual songs, making music in their hearts to the Lord. (Ephesians 5; Colossians 3) Jesus sings a hymn (Matthew 26). We are told by the prophet Zephaniah that God sings too, and in Job 38 we learn that the stars sing. So it comes as no surprise that Mary has a song too, commonly called the Magnificat (Latin for “magnifies”), from the first phrase of the song, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”
As Advent unfolds this year and we encounter the sweeping Story of God in our own lives, may we sing too. Like Mary, even when the news is mixed and the end is not in sight, may we savor the chapters of deliverance and joy, and sing songs that magnify the Author of it all.
Prayer: Giver of good gifts, thank you for the gift of song. Inspire in us a new song that lifts heavenward our gratitude for the great things you have done for us!
