Read: Luke 2:15-52
But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. (v. 19) And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. (v. 51)
What do you count as treasure? For me, the word too often suggests a chest at the bottom of an ocean; a bulging trunk full of gold I hope to someday recover. But whether you’re like me, or you’ve already got your gold in a house, barn, or bank, treasure is typically something we can put our hands on.
The treasure spoken of by Luke, however, is treasure of the heart. Mary picks up memories like precious stones, keeps them in a bag, and takes them out often to consider their potential, angle, color, and weight again. When we ponder memories like that, it is often because we are trying to comprehend the incomprehensible. There is little logic in the events of Mary’s life. Yet, because she trusts God, she considers it all treasure: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
We also have gifts of treasure to ponder: experiences that weigh us down like stones, even if we trust that God is good. So, we take them out from time to time, consider them anew, and find that sometimes an edge is worn off, or a stone has cracked open. Perhaps one day we even see the treasure that was there all along.
Prayer: Giver of good gifts, may we treasure each moment and memory of life with you, more certain with the passing of time that you are good, and will reveal your plan in time, just like you did for Mary.
