The Gift of Light

Read: John 1:1-13
In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (vv. 4-5 NIV)

John, apostle, closest friend of Jesus, and Gospel writer, had a unique vantage to say Jesus’ life holds a different kind of light than we’ve ever seen. Imagine housing within yourself life that is the light of all mankind, a light more powerful than any darkness, no matter how impenetrable.

As I ponder the magnitude of this light, I think the words of Jesus, “I am the light of the world (John 8:12; 9:5),” are much more than metaphorical. Think of Paul, who was blinded for days after an experience with the resurrected Jesus, calling his light “unapproachable” (1 Tim. 6:16).

By inviting Jesus to live in us, we share in the gift. Our lamp is lit, so to speak. Jesus tells the crowds gathered to hear him speak, “you are the light of the world” (Matt. 5:14). My feelings mirror a lyric I heard in church Sunday:

Praise the wisdom of the Father / Who has spoken through His Son
Speaking still, He calls us to / The Glorious Impossible
.

It takes me back to a lyric penned by Tim Timmons: The same great light that broke the dark … hallelujah, is living in me. Like Timmons, may we challenge ourselves during Epiphany: And what, what if I believed in Your power, and I really lived it? / What, what if I believed Christ in me? It’s gloriously impossible, and yet this is the promise and gift of God.

Prayer: Giver of good gifts, thank you for the glorious impossible. The gift of your life, the light of all men, women, and children; the Light of the World; the light that shines on through the darkness, no matter how deep. And thank you that this gift shines in and through me to others who need light for the journey.
