SCRIPTURE: When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6 NIV.
THOUGHT: It has really struck me while doing this study on wisdom that not all wisdom is God’s wisdom. It makes talking about wisdom and seeking wisdom more challenging. Kind of like talking about rainbows or provisions or ecstasy these days – or even freedom, for heaven’s sake – you’re never quite certain that you know what is meant by the word.
The thought for today is that just because something looks and sounds fantastic, and you’ve been promised it will benefit your life, doesn’t mean it’s so. That’s where the entirety of history went wrong. The fruit Adam and Eve ate was desirable for gaining wisdom but it’s immediate consequence was a desire to hide from God. They knew things they didn’t need to know, and lost sight of the relationship that was most precious. Some brand of wisdom.
If we find ourselves doing things we want to hide, or on the flip side, things we want to brazenly show off because no one is ever going to control us, we might need to check the source of wisdom, because it’s likely not God’s.
PRAYER: Oh God, our lives on earth are full of mixed messages, hype, and confusing fine print. Even our internal worlds are full of second guessing and clashing motives. Give us your kind of wisdom to see through every lie meant to make us stumble. Your wisdom. Your freedom. Your kingdom, on earth as in heaven.
