Little Lesson 6: It’s About God

AUTHOR NOTE: I’ve been writing songs since I was a little girl. Even before I could write, I would make up little songs, and then I started writing them down. Recently I began to pull these songs and scraps of songs and poems together, and the numbers are growing. I’m calling the February devotional series “Little Lessons” and through Scripture and a snippet of song, you’ll get a glimpse inside my faith journey as I share what God has shown me along the way. February is a month when we celebrate love, and what bigger love to celebrate than the one that reaches down into human history and rescues and redeems? It’s the very stuff of love stories!

SCRIPTURE:  This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. 1 John 3:19-20 NIV

THOUGHT: Oh, the penchant of the human heart to make it about us! How hard it is to entertain that we’re not the center of everything, and harder still – but freeing – to step into the bigger story God is telling and acknowledge that it’s the author’s right to tell the story the way he wants to. It’s enough that he invites me to co-author by listening, learning, and leaning hard into following.

In the end, John, that beloved disciple, says we set our hearts at rest in his presence because God is greater than our hearts. His bigness, his power, his omniscience (he knows everything) is exactly what our hearts need to rest.

My changing heart may shift again
But if I fail, this thing remains:
A perfect ransom paid by One
Who redeems saints and vagabonds

I set my feet upon the Rock
I rest my head, I bow my heart
And there I breathe a victory song
I’m trusting strong and leaning hard into my God

PRAYER: Whether I am a saint or a vagabond (and you know I’ve been both) dear Father, I’m glad you’ve invited me away from perfection and pleasing and into rest in your presence. It’s my victory song that it’s about you, not me.

Dear Reader,
I’m glad you’re along and I pray you will be blessed, challenged, and encouraged in your faith by something you read here.
