Little Lesson 16: A ‘Little’ Perspective

AUTHOR NOTE: I’ve been writing songs since I was a little girl. Even before I could write, I would make up little songs, and then I started writing them down. Recently I began to pull these songs and scraps of songs and poems together, and the numbers are growing. I’m calling the February devotional series “Little Lessons” and through Scripture and a snippet of song, you’ll get a glimpse inside my faith journey as I share what God has shown me along the way. February is a month when we celebrate love, and what bigger love to celebrate than the one that reaches down into human history and rescues and redeems? It’s the very stuff of love stories!

SCRIPTURE:  In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah 6:1-5 NIV

THOUGHT: Until we see God for who he is – and that can happen in so many different ways – we cannot truly see who we are. We spend our life’s energy fighting to be significant, then, for just a moment, we forget ourselves in the presence of one so beyond us that we feel, like Isaiah, ruined. Creature meets Creator and we do the listening. Perhaps that’s just the moment needed to start a transformation that goes on into eternity, because the Creator doesn’t leave us ruined. Like Isaiah, our guilt is taken away, our sin is atoned for, and we’re given a place in the Big Story of God.

Flawed and fallen all of me, it’s not a matter of degree, when
All your glory is revealed, the truth more blazing than the mystery
I could feel so caught, alone, ashamed and frightened, far from home; and
Stripped of ego, turn and run, but I just stare, eternally undone
Could I come closer, ‘cause

You make me forget myself; all my foolish cares and doubts,
Lost in just one glimpse of who you are.
I stop striving, worry stills; every moment comes to this
You are God and God alone — wholly other, Holy One

Silenced in Your presence, God; ravished by Your brilliance, I’m
Swallowed in the rush of grace flowing from Your throne; the
Saints and angels sing one word, more beautiful than any heard —
“Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord,” Holy are you Living God, and

You make us forget ourselves; all our foolish doubts and cares,
Lost in just one glimpse of who You are.
We stop striving, worry stills; every moment comes to this
You are God and God alone –wholly other, Holy One;
Wholly other, Holy One.
