Choose Life: A Lenten Meditation

Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days. Deuteronomy 30:19-20 ESV

Choosing life seems simple. We want to live, and so we make choices that keep us alive. But staying alive and truly living are different matters. Even someone caught in an addiction, or seeking abortion, or bungee jumping into a canyon will testify they are in pursuit of life.

The problem lies in how we define ‘life,’ and where we believe it is found. For some, Christian or not, the next burst of adrenaline is what makes them feel alive, others are content to just stay off the radar screen and away from events that could potentially harm or shame them. Still others only feel alive if their friends or finances look right, or if they feel better than those around them. These are illusions of life. Seeking security and significance outside of God is not only futile, it is slavery. If you’ve ever hit the bottom and needed another fix, you know this, whether the fix took the shape of a person, a substance, or a thing.

Going to God, choosing to pursue life where he says it can be found, takes care of security and significance. We are children of a king, with an inheritance that will not perish, choosing the path of the one who said “I am the life.”

Prayer: Giver of life and length of days, help us hold fast to you, choosing life for ourselves and our children, loving you, following your voice and walking straight into life, life, and more life.
