Between Darkness and Miracle: A Lenten Meditation

SCRIPTURE What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. I Corinthians 15:36-37

THOUGHT Death seems less cruel and frightening when I think about seeds, and the energy for life that they hold, and the process of death they must go through before that energy is released. It amazes me how God set the rhythms of this world in motion to help us understand the rhythms of his Kingdom. Every farmer who wants a crop has to cast seeds into the ground, bury them at an appropriate depth, and pray they don’t look the same in a few months. Darkness and decay do something miraculous.

In the darkness of the tomb, where the broken body of Jesus lay, the promise of his life seemed dead. To his disciples and others who had put their hope in him as Messiah, the world was upside down. But God, whose ways are higher than ours, was at work on a level we simply can’t comprehend. God saw life within death, and life beyond grave, and the promise of all things new at the end.

PRAYER Oh God, who set in motion cycles of birth, death and resurrection, thank you for the blessed miracle in the tomb where Jesus was laid, his body a seed that would grow into the tree of life! Thank you for the promise that we, too, will be transformed, emerging from death with a life so different we can’t even imagine.
