SCRIPTURE: If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 ESV
THOUGHT: Today wraps up the little mini-series on the Trinity with a power-packed question that answers itself: If God is for us, who can be against us? If we can only take in the truth of Paul’s conclusion about who God is and how that impacts us, we can walk in freedom and confidence. Each member of the God-head, Father, Son and Spirit, is for us!
In just a few short sentences in Romans 8, Paul presents memorable biographies of each member of the Triune God. Truths that have the power to transform your life, even if they are all you know about God. These truths are backed up by all of Scripture, but it’s just fun to see them all here together:
- God the Father is for you and does not condemn, but instead justifies, defends, validates, and explains you. (31-33)
- Jesus is right beside God the Father interceding, intervening, mediating, pleading, negotiating, and arbitrating for you. (34)
- The Holy Spirit of God, who is God and thus understands the will of God in every circumstance, helps you by praying for you, even while you’re praying, with groanings that cannot be expressed in words, pleading for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. Knowing God’s will can be such a mystery and even point of anxiety for us, but this is a place we can find rest. (26-27)
It seems to me, that like everything else in the Christian life, we come to a question that must be answered: will we believe what Scripture teaches and let it minister to us this side of heaven — or will we reject these truths as too simple, too ‘good to be true’ with our skeptical hearts and minds, continuing to strive for another way – one that involves more action and requires less trust?
PRAYER: Jesus, you once wept over a city and people you loved, saying “if only you had known what would bring you peace.” Well, we know that trusting you, your Father, and the Holy Spirit can bring us peace, and still our hearts can be stubborn and disbelieving, full of anxiety and human striving. Forgive us, renew us, help our unbelief!
