Sunbeams & Fountains; Shadows & Drought

SCRIPTURE:  For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. Psalm 36:9 NIV

THOUGHT: Tell me if it hasn’t been true in your life: When we get a little of the living water, we discover a whole fountain we’ve been missing; when we get even a little God-given light, it’s like a portal opens and we see so much more. We may not have all we want, but we know where to go to get water and light. Where to find the sunbeams that open up to the sun; where to find the fountain that never runs dry.

This is life in God.

On the flip side, through Jeremiah, God puts it like this: “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water (Jer. 2:13).”

In other words, God’s light and water are there all along for us, but even as God’s people, we have options. We can forsake God and rely on the electricity of the world, the glitz, glamour, sex, success, drugs, electronics in our hands and homes and marketplaces to be our life, to give us life. We can look at God’s fountain of life, and say ‘no thanks, I’d rather dig my own well.’ God won’t control us, he’ll let us go dig those cisterns and find out how cracked they are.

Spoken out of love as one who’s tried to find light in the shadows and water from broken cisterns. Only go there if you want to come up empty and in the dark.

PRAYER: Oh God, forgive us for not coming straight to the source when we are thirsty or lack sight. Hear our prayer and open to us your light and water.
