This Morning

A FAVOR: I’d like to ask a favor. Would you visit the National Day of Prayer website and find something you can partake in on that day, next Thursday, May 4? National Day of Prayer, find an event.
Alternatively, My Faith Votes has created a .pdf with suggestions for holding your own event at your church or with your small group, organize and execute a successful event

SCRIPTURE:  Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Psalm 143:8 NIV

THOUGHT: I started out this morning to write something that would cheer us, some lighthearted verse, full of faith and joy. So I chose Psalm 143:8, which stands before me each morning as box art on my kitchen window sill. I love seeing it, and often say it out loud as a prayer. There’s a feeling of wistfulness as I pray it, like waiting to receive a letter from of a beloved who’s been gone a long time. I long for a reminder of God’s unfailing love, and there is joy when I receive one.

But then I made the mistake of looking at the context, ha ha. And what was meant to be lighthearted suddenly became serious. David wasn’t looking at art in his window as he prayed this. He was desperate for protection and direction and deliverance from his enemies:

7 Answer me quickly, Lord;

    my spirit fails.

Do not hide your face from me

    or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,

    for I have put my trust in you.

Show me the way I should go,

    for to you I entrust my life.

9 Rescue me from my enemies, Lord,

    for I hide myself in you.

Psalm 143:7-9

And that’s the way it is, isn’t it? We start out convinced we will have a day of joy and simplicity, and end up desperate for God’s intervention due to unforeseen circumstances. A child in trouble, a sudden illness, relational or financial challenges, broken trust, broken cars, broken appliances, broken culture – you get it. But just like David of old, we find that our trust in God is the thing that stands between us and “the pit” or a “failing spirit.” And God comes through, time and time again, bringing us word of his unfailing love. That is, in fact, a source of joy, even in the midst of whatever life throws at us.

PRAYER: Oh God, bring each of us a word of your unfailing love for this day. Lighten our hearts and loads with a Savior willing to yoke up with us and a Spirit to keep us company.
