THOUGHT: I wrote about this verse a few weeks ago, but suddenly this morning saw something different there. It’s about being known. Deeply. Intimately. Across your lifetime. About your heart being searched, pursued, understood.
How many people know you like that?
This is one of those truths about God that we can skim, acknowledge, and live with for years before suddenly realizing how profoundly being known by a good Father impacts our relationship. As a child, we may have been taught this truth in order to elicit good behavior, i.e. “God is watching you, young lady!” (or “young man!”) But as an adult, I’m over being scared of God watching because I know it is out of love. And like a child who has grown up, I suddenly want to know and understand my Father better. I want to ask better questions than I so often did of my earthly father, like, “can I borrow the car,” or “do you have five dollars?”
I’m somewhere in the middle of a new, deeper relationship that will only get better when I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. (1 Corinthians 13:12).
PRAYER: Oh God, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain (Ps. 139:1-6), but I thank you that I am known and loved by the same one who created the world, and loved it all enough to die to redeem it.
