SCRIPTURE: As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father [have personal knowledge of Him, be acquainted with, and understand Him; appreciate, heed, and cherish Him] and serve Him with a blameless heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts and minds, and understands every intent and inclination of the thoughts. If you seek Him [inquiring for and of Him and requiring Him as your first and vital necessity] He will let you find Him; but if you abandon (turn away from) Him, He will reject you forever. 1 Chronicles 28:9 AMP

THOUGHT: Kind of shocking to see 93 words in just one verse, isn’t it? I hope you’ll pause and take them all in – there’s so much there in this advice from a father to his son about knowing God. Deeply. Intimately. Across a lifetime. About searching for, pursuing, and understanding that great heart, even as he does yours.
And it’s not just a father’s advice – it’s a king’s advice to the son who would succeed him to the throne. That’s one thing I always appreciate about David. He never seems to throw his power around, and when you read his words, it’s pretty clear he never confuses himself with God. He wants to pass that deep love and respect along to Solomon. He wants his beloved son to never abandon the most important relationship on earth.
The thing that touches me most is the promise that if I seek him [inquiring for and of Him and requiring Him as your first and vital necessity] he will let himself be found. God does not answer to scientific inquiry; you can’t know him as part of an experiment. He answers the human heart that cares for him, cares for what he has made, and what he has made known. If he is my first and vital necessity, I will approach relationship with God with more urgency than anything else in life. I will lean into the understanding that life and breath starts there. Mysterious, yes; but also commonplace and daily and simple. A worldview that starts and ends with truth: Whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 11:6 ESV).
PRAYER: Oh God, I believe you can be known, and yet you are beyond my understanding. Somehow, it all makes sense to me, and I will seek. You will let yourself be found, and what a reward that is, Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer, Friend.
