SCRIPTURE: Lord, You have been our dwelling place [our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability] in all generations. Psalm 90:1 AMP
THOUGHT: It’s ironic, in the midst of the Psalms, to find this one attributed to “Moses, the man of God.” Even as I study dwelling with God, I want to dwell with Moses in his reflections of God. After all, Moses lived to be 120 years old, and had a lot of time to know God personally, meeting with him on the mountain, and covering his face thereafter each time he met with God because it would become so brilliant it frightened people. Time with God left light on Moses.
Moses was not just there for the giving of the law that would shape the people of God, he was the keeper of the God-Story, and it is Moses who wrote it all down for them (and us): Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy.
Moses had a unique position from which to say to God, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. He understood the sweep of history, and the sweeping saga of his own life, from the basket in the water where his parents hid him, to the palace of Pharaoh, to the calling of God as he hid again because he had murdered an Egyptian, to deliverance through the Red Sea, and all of the miraculous ways God had provided for the exodus from slavery.
So, every time this week things get a little rocky, remember Moses’ life, and the God-Story. Throughout all generations, going back thousands and thousands of years, God has provided a refuge, a sanctuary, a stable truth to live by in a world of instability. A dwelling place for now, and for forever.
PRAYER: Oh God, you have been our refuge, our sanctuary, our stability in all generations. A home, if only we choose to dwell there, allowing you to leave your light on us. Thank you for this reminder from “Moses, the man of God.”
