SCRIPTURE: So teach us to number our days, that we may cultivate and bring to You a heart of wisdom. Psalm 90:12 AMP
THOUGHT: On the heels of his prayer about the incredible and endless days of our Creator, “from everlasting to everlasting,” Moses turns toward the numbered days of humans. He moves from a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday to but I have no idea how long I’ll be here.
Somehow, understanding that time is short helps us live differently, so numbering our days is something we need God’s help with. “So teach us,” Moses prays, “that we may cultivate.” A robust theology of my life within the spectrum of eternity helps me live as if life matters. I focus on cultivating – plowing fallow ground, planting good seed, rooting out weeds – and then watching as God causes growth (as Paul said, 1 Cor. 3:6). On the other hand, a belief that life is meaningless, random, and ends in the grave leads to chaos and despair. Nihilism in a nutshell.
I love the end result of the cultivating in Moses’ prayer: not great success or incredible feats of valor, not barns full of accumulated worldly treasure, but hearts full of wisdom. A gift we can bring along when we reach the end of the numbered days and come to stand before the throne.
PRAYER: Oh God, teach me to number my days so I, too, can bring you a heart full of your wisdom.
