SCRIPTURE: Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Psalm 51:6 ESV
QUOTE: “What is truth?” – Pilate to Jesus
THOUGHT: There’s probably never been a fiercer debate throughout history than “what is truth?” My purpose this morning isn’t to get into that debate, it’s just to point out that truth-seeking is wrapped up in our DNA – it just takes a lot of different roads; some lead to idols, some to lies, some to strong delusions, and some lead to despair, such as the despair Pilate might have felt the day Jesus stood before him for judgement saying, “For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice (Jn. 18:37 ESV).”
There are many roads each of us can take, but one leads home, to a place of rest and peace. To a rock that provides shelter and a sure foundation. To be sure, it is a narrow road because it is not our truth, it is God’s, but it does not make narrow people of us. It makes loving, kind, self-disciplined, and hopeful people of us.
So this is a little departure from the July series about faith without works (for which some of you will be glad, I’m sure!). And honestly, I need a little break from all the tragedy, all the chaos around me, and the hard thinking about faith and culture. But that passion in me will return, likely tomorrow morning, because God has offered to place his truth in my inward being and teach me wisdom in the secret heart and I have accepted. The Psalmist says he delights to do that, and I want to use those amazing gifts by pressing into the age-old question, “what is truth?”
PRAYER: Oh God, thank you that you delight, DELIGHT, when you see truth and wisdom growing in us.
