Settled.

SCRIPTURE:  Even to your old age I am he, and to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. Isaiah 46:4 ESV

THOUGHT: As is typical for me, I can find a way to fret even when I read good news. I think about my gray hair and, in sync with Paul groan who can save me from the body of this death? Because you see, I’ve had gray hairs since I was 20!

But more important than my groan (which is silly if it’s about gray hair, but more serious as any of us face illness and injury), is what Paul went on to say: Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! The answer to who will save me is God, and it’s always been God, it’s just that the eagerness to finally be free from sin and death and sorrow and sighing gets a little stronger as I go.

These promises from Isaiah are like a hope chest. Packed full of gifts for the marriage – only in this case, all the gifts are from our beloved! I am his and he is mine. The hope is not that Jesus will find me someday, that’s settled. The hope is for our joyful lives together. Until that day, I go to the hope chest and linger over the beautiful promises: I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. His are the promises, mine is to have the faith to trust him with this gray-haired head of mine.

PRAYER: It’s settled. I have accepted your invitation, your proposal. I am yours and you are mine! Thank you for these gifts of hope I did nothing to deserve, oh Jesus.
