SCRIPTURE: And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs. Luke 12:15 AMPC
THOUGHT: The quest for more once our needs are met is one of Satan’s most effective weapons. Rightfully Jesus says “guard yourselves.”
Attractions, distractions, side roads, and side shows as we pursue the more take our eyes off what gives true life: freedom from anxious living; a wider perspective that includes life here + life there. It’s all life. It’s all ours. The one who knows when a sparrow falls (Matthew 10:29), knows what we need and will feed and clothe us (Luke 12:31) while we engage in the good works he has planned for us (Ephesians 2:10).
Nurturing the view from here to eternity helps us avoid all that chaos that comes from running to possess overflowing abundance when we already have abundant lives. It gets us out of the rat race and onto chasing whatever good God has in mind. It acknowledges heaven is just a heartbeat away from any of us, and storing up treasure there is building a portfolio in the truest sense of the word.
PRAYER: In God I trust, grateful for the abundance of his world and free from the desire to possess more.
