Bad Exchange

SCRIPTURE:  They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator… Romans 1:25 NASB

THOUGHT: In this life, there are good exchanges and bad. If we traded in our 20-year-old Corolla with a couple hundred thousand miles for $5,000, we would say that was a good exchange. However, if we traded our home to the bank because we could no longer make the payments, it would be considered a bad exchange. It might relieve us in the short term, but we would lose our down payment and equity and face starting all over with fewer resources.

In the spiritual life, the stakes are even higher. A bad exchange, such as trading the truth of God for a lie, can become a permanent habit, and then an astronomical loss that can’t be recovered. Once we “trade” life for death, there is no going back. Jesus said, “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul (Mt. 16:26)?”

Loss of the soul – and loss of the opportunity to live eternally surrounded by only joy and only truth and no worry – it’s a bad exchange for choosing to worship the creature rather than the Creator.

I’ve seen how easy it is to trade truth for lies, and the question today is where are you or I making bad exchanges with the life we’ve been offered?

PRAYER: Oh Great Creator, I don’t want to trade your truth for a single lie, and yet I am flawed and broken in ways I don’t even see. Please keep speaking truth to me!
