SCRIPTURE: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3:22-24 NIV
THOUGHT: Lamentations is not for the faint of heart. A longing soul can find some comfort, but it’s sparse. But I see myself in those pages, and I see our world. So often we get to thinking God must love me for what I do for him, and so often the world operates as if the Living God is a fantasy. Neither. It is only unfailing love, compassion and faithfulness that keep us from being consumed. The great experiment of God for the human race could be up at any minute and we could be standing before the throne. But in his love and compassion and faithfulness, he is also patient, waiting for hearts and ears and eyes to turn to him (2 Peter 3:9) before what Scripture calls “that great and dreadful day (Malachi 4:5).”
The writer of Lamentations concludes this: The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him. When we see what is happening in the world right now, it’s so easy to postulate about what should happen. In the big picture however, my posture before God is patience and trust. He offers new compassions for every morning, including this one.
PRAYER: Oh God, I see your patience; you’ve been good in the past, you still are today, and will be tomorrow. You’ve been incredibly patient with me and I will be the same with you. You are my portion, therefore I will wait.
