SCRIPTURE: Blessed [joyful, nourished by God’s goodness] are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness [those who actively seek right standing with God], for they will be [completely] satisfied. Matthew 5:6 AMP
THOUGHT: In the spiritual world, you can be malnourished and not even know it. If you haven’t discovered a hunger for righteousness, or aren’t actively seeking it, you won’t be getting the nutrition you need. Jesus once told his closest friends, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about (John 4:32).” His secret source of nutrition was actively seeking God and God’s will. That filled him up for the next long day, and fueled his passion even to the cross.
Righteousness is a strange word to many ears, and I think we need to unpack it a little. We conflate it in our minds with self-righteousness until the two are synonymous. But no. To long for righteousness is to long for right living and a clean conscience before God. To be righteous is to be wrapped in the robes of Christ, acknowledging that complete righteousness belongs to him, and he has graciously offered to share his with us. It is not to act righteous without that longing and acknowledgement. There is no pride in this hungering and thirsting and gift.
Attaining the promise is worth the hungering and thirsting: “For they shall be filled,” says the KJV; a promise of total nourishment for the soul and spirit. We can have complete satisfaction; no need for a money back guarantee because we didn’t pay for it in the first place.
PRAYER: Oh God, fill us with good spiritual nutrition. Satisfy our longings for right living and right standing with a fullness that cannot be shaken and shattered.
