The Little Things: New Beginnings

SCRIPTURE:  Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 ESV

THOUGHT: Moving can be rough. Sometimes as an act of will you have to set the “former things” aside in order to stay present to what God is doing now. The weariness of packing, repacking, selling and donating, making a million decisions about buying, selling or renting, the goodbyes – it can all wear you down, knocking out of you all the enthusiasm you might feel about the future. It seems like “the honeymoon” is over, despite the newness of everything around you. The excitement you felt when you made the decision is dulled by reality.

But then, you begin to see the wonderful creativity of our God in action.

I learned a long time ago that sometimes God rebuilds, and sometimes he starts over, and we have to fall into step beside him whichever work he is doing.

The good news is, as you process your losses and let them go, resting in his goodness, you find things about your new space to love, you find a new place to fellowship with other believers, you begin to make new friends, and God does something new. You see it springing up where there was nothing before. By God’s grace, you begin to perceive part of his plan in bringing you on this journey. Instead of rebuilding on rubble, he is doing something new. He has made a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. You’ve been empty and tired, but now there is a smoother road with a long, cool drink of fresh water.

Of course, moving is only one of many challenges life throws our way – but God is experienced at new beginnings, and that is a joy to remember.

PRAYER: Oh God, let me not despise the day of new beginnings (Zech. 4:10) but find joy in the work you are doing each day.
