The Little Things: Music

SCRIPTURE:  In the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. Psalm 63:7 ESV

THOUGHT: Music has been a big part of my life and of my relationship with God. It is the vehicle he used so many years ago to draw me out of darkness and into light. It became the place he made for me in ministry as I began to face and heal from the damage of my childhood and so many bad decisions. To this day, there is nothing I enjoy more than sitting down at the piano and singing through the songs God has given me on that journey.

Like most of the “little” things I’ve been writing about, music is really not a small deal at all, but it comes to us in small ways. It’s something we can take for granted, and something we can pass casually by without paying much attention. It’s something the world, the flesh, and the devil know how to deceive and manipulate us with, that’s for sure – and I’ve seen its power in my own life to bring me closer to God, and in the same manner, slowly draw my heart away and back to the world.

As a tool in the Savior’s hands, however, it can open up the heart like nothing else, softening edges, lowering barriers, lifting countenances, readying us for “the implanted word, which is able to save your souls,” as James 1:21 puts it.

That brings me to Scripture for these devotional thoughts. Once you and I make the decision to come under the wings of our God, to learn his story and acknowledge his saving deeds in our lives, we’ve entered a whole new realm in both music and the spoken word. From that place of protection, we can sing for joy, no matter what else is happening around us.

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for taking us under your wings. In that great shadow, may we sing and make melody in our hearts to you today.
