SCRIPTURE: I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. Isaiah 61:10 ESV
THOUGHT: I have a set of original Fiesta dinnerware inherited from my grandmother, mother and an aunt. Even as a child, I loved using those colorful dishes, and although their value continued to grow, I made a decision to enjoy them daily rather than preserve them as delicate keepsakes in a china hutch.
It can be a little that way with our salvation. Although it’s not a fragile thing, sometimes we treat it like it’s an event to be relegated to the past or to a shelf for safekeeping. Isaiah might say it’s a little like securing the most costly, amazing, designer labeled suit or dazzling dress and then hanging it in a cedar-lined closet and forgetting it. We trivialize the importance of the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness to our everyday life.
Today’s thought is simply to remind us that these garments aren’t meant to be hidden. They are meant to be wrapped up in, remembered, worn, enjoyed. They’re perhaps the most obvious reason we have to greatly rejoice and exult in God. Just for today use your sanctified imagination to see the beautiful clothes God has given you, then wrap them around you and go forth in joy. He’s got you covered.
PRAYER: Oh God, we might have chosen fig leaves, but you chose robes of righteousness and garments of salvation. May we remember the beauty and dignity you’ve wrapped us in and never relegate it to the shelf as if it’s a fragile keepsake.
