Christmas with John, 3

SCRIPTURE:  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:3 KJV

THOUGHT: John 1:3 brings a whole new layer of understanding to the prequel of Jesus in a manger. Our minds want to say, “whaaaaatttttttttt? Not only did Jesus pre-exist before his birth, he is actually The Creator of all things???” Look, don’t shoot me, I’m just the messenger. This is what John reveals. And remember, John eventually got to reveal a lot more than just this (think The Revelation of John). In that book, he said a lot about Jesus and the end, and here he says a lot about Jesus and the beginning.

What John is trying to communicate with all his beautiful, poetic words is that our faith in Jesus the Christ must go much deeper than a baby born to a virgin (which seems enough), or even an amazing healer and prophet and rabbi (which seems enough), or even a sinless life, crucified for all mankind (which seems enough). It must go as deep as the entire story of the world as narrated by God.

All things were made by him – Jesus the Godman. His creativity knows no boundaries, hence he is able to do exceedingly more than we ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20). He is able to cross the boundaries of time and space, live after death, know the contents of our hearts, and keep all that we have entrusted to him. He is able to hold all things in this universe together, and likewise, he can allow those things to spin apart at his will and command. He makes nations rise and fall, and in the end, it’s still his world. He made it. He owns it. He loves it. He died to prove that. And this is why we worship, at Christmas and always.
