SCRIPTURE: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14 KJV
THOUGHT: Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you get a moment of peace today when your heart is singing something like, Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing, oh come let us adore him. Whether you do or not, find a way to celebrate history’s greatest birthday and get the amazing story of the birth and life of Jesus spinning around like a favorite record.
John reaches the pinnacle of his prologue with this good news – the Word who was from the beginning, through whom all things were made, who is the Light of the world – that Word was made flesh and tabernacled among us. God, wrapped in fragile, human flesh.
By the time he wrote this, John had walked with Jesus daily for years, seen the healings, the compassion, the mind-bending power over matter and demons and twisted, sin-sick souls that Jesus stewarded. He had heard the stories and lessons and enjoyed the fellowship for which we long. In short, John knew far more about the kingdom of heaven than he had a few years before. He beheld the glory of which he wrote, and his testimony after watching it all unfold is that Jesus embodied grace and truth.
The thought for today is that Jesus wanted to be with us in flesh. Wanted to breathe our air and walk our sod, as songwriter Chris Rice put it. He wanted to bring all that grace and truth down to our level so we’d know what God is like. What a gift that was and is: Emmanuel, God With Us. We’re known, and can know God more fully if we choose to move closer to the one who moved closer to us.

PRAYER: Oh God thank you for wrapping a part of yourself as a gift to us – not in paper with a bow, but in fragile flesh, vulnerable to all the same things we are. Happy birthday and thank you Jesus, for laughing and crying and eating and celebrating and loving and sacrificing, all without sin, so we could get a bigger picture of who God our Father is.
