Little Lesson 4: Miracles Happen

SCRIPTURE:  Let those who love the LORD hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 97:10 NIV

THOUGHT: If you’re thoroughly modern, you might not believe in miracles … and you might not believe in evil either. If that’s the case, a verse like this won’t make sense to you. But, if you’re like me, eyes wide open to both evil and its nemesis (God and his miraculous ways), read on while you call to mind your own inexplicable stories.

When the children of Israel leave Egypt, God is completely in control of their destiny. What he chooses is to lead them directly to the Red Sea, with nowhere to escape when their enemies chase – he must part that sea and then he must allow the waters to come back together, in one felt swoop delivering them on dry ground through the sea and, in the end, drowning their enemies.

Imagine the hours of anxiety as it all unfolded. Then imagine the hours they could have spent instead in wonder at the miraculous power of the God who delivers us from bondage and danger and the hand of the wicked. We have that choice too.

I have my own stories of God’s miraculous deliveries, and, based on those experiences, I believe he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Sometimes the wicked aren’t visible, they are invisible forces of evil, tempting, throwing obstacles in my path, and just making the journey miserable. And, let’s be real, sometimes the only thing to blame is my own flesh. But whether it’s the world, the flesh, or the devil, it’s like raging waters that need to be parted, and gratefully we have a God who can do that!

In October of last year, I tried to capture it all in a song, making the experience of the ancient people of God relevant to my own:

SONG:

As I travel through the pages of the Bible
And I travel through the perils of this life
Darkest night or brightest day, God you have never failed
Oh Savior, won’t you part those seas again?

Oh Savior won’t you part raging waters in my heart
Rising tides and billows rolling o’r my soul
Put my feet on solid ground, help me reach that promised land
Oh Savior, won’t you part those seas again

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you that you have an answer for each scheme of evil. In your miraculous power, guard our lives and deliver those faithful to you.
