SCRIPTURE: Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. Revelation 19:11-12 ESV
THOUGHT: You can probably tell that I’ve been thinking a lot about “endings” during the past year. And it’s true. It just comes out in the songwriting more than elsewhere. Our pastor did a series on Revelation in 2023 and it was so good to unpack what I had read over the years but never heard teaching on.
Anyway, on some level it doesn’t really matter whether it’s sooner or later – every day I’m getting closer to the grave or the sky, so I’m grateful for the days of thinking more about endings. It all used to seem so far away, but as I survey the landscape and wonder where current events are all going, it seems heaven is getting closer. The promise of no more tears or sorrow or death stands out in stark relief to the chaos I see around me. But, just like heaven came down before, so heaven will come down again – this time not as a baby on a peace mission, but as a King on a justice mission. He’s coming back to finish what he started, establishing the Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. It still scares me a little, but there’s nothing wrong with a healthy fear of God. Mostly I can say, as does John at the end of Revelation, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”
SONG:
Just a few more sighs and prayers; just a few more trials and snares
Just a few more tears in that bottle heaven saves
Sorrow’s billows, death’s cold waves, roll o’er my soul a few more days
‘Til death and tears and sorrow disappear in victory!Heaven come down again; heaven we are listening
Amy L. Clemens, Heaven Come Down Again, 4.24.23
For the voice we know and love to raise the victory song
Heaven come down again complete the work that you began
Jesus won’t you bring heaven down again?
PRAYER: Oh God, what a day that will be, when heaven comes down again in the form of a conquering king on a white horse with a victory song. It’s scary. It’s exhilarating. Help me live always as if today is the day!
