SCRIPTURE: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be … lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. 2 Timothy 3:1,5 ESV
THOUGHT: I guess I have a little thing about “Big God.” The phrase is found frequently in the book I’ve written, it’s often in my speaking and writing; it’s even at the top of my resume. I’ve often said you can only worship as big as your God is, and if you cut God’s “legs” off to bring him down to manageable size, your worship will follow. God can’t be managed. God can’t be contained. You can’t put him in a test tube to study. You can’t pretend to know him at the same time you are denying his power. And it follows that you can’t expect the big answers you need from a small god.
The stories that inspire that phrase for me are woven throughout Scripture, and frankly, they are all around us today too. We just have to open our spiritual eyes and understanding, and press into what it means to be a lover of God.
So, if you don’t trust me, open those eyes and look around.
SONG:
There are stories all around us, there are wonders, there are signs
Of a big God with big answers that astonish hearts and minds
He can rescue from a prison, he can give sight to the blind
He can meet the desperate need of someone doubting him tonight, butIf you don’t trust me, trust Joseph, who trusted God at every twist and turn, and
Amy L. Clemens, If You Don’t Trust Me, 12.4.22
If you are guilty, trust David, mercy flows from heaven’s throne, and
If you are fearful, trust Esther, ‘cause fear can’t walk where freedom can,
Trust the Savior who has a greater, more-than-you-ask-for, amazing plan
PRAYER: Oh God, once I became a lover of you rather than pleasure, or self, or all the other things I could give my heart to, you opened my eyes to see just what a Big God you truly are. Thank you for your greater, more-than-I-ask-for, amazing plan!
