SCRIPTURE: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. Psalm 33:12 KJV
THOUGHT: I don’t really believe in cultural Christianity because it seems a lot like holding to a form of godliness but denying it’s power. But I do believe in the concept of a nation that is Christian, and I wish it still described our country.
If you’ve been reading my blog for long, you know I often write about what’s happening in culture and how it saddens me. We have many challenges and among them is living in the tension of our times without giving up on either the church or the culture. Paul instructs the Romans, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good (Rom. 12:9).” We have to keep finding a way to weave sincere love with hatred of evil and clinging to what is good. That’s not an easy path, is it? We have a lot to be thankful for, and while there is also much evil, we can’t forget to cling to the good. The cornerstone hasn’t changed. We still have a God who can move mountains. I love this country and won’t give up that easy, and a couple of years ago, I penned it into a song that borrowed thoughts from America the Beautiful and the chorus was this:
SONG:
Down here we’ll keep on praying God mend our every flaw,
Amy L. Clemens, Down Here, 6.28.22
Confirm our soul in self-control, our liberty in law
Forgive our lack of gratitude, with truth refine our gold, oh
God has blessed America; will America bless God?
PRAYER: Oh God, your word says “blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.” I pray you will mend our flaws, confirm our souls in self-control and confirm our liberty in law. Forgive our lack of gratitude, refine our gold with the truth; help us become again a nation you can bless.
