Little Lesson 16: Presence

SCRIPTURE:  You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! Psalm 139:5-7 NLT

THOUGHT: When we learn to really love God, we begin to understand that life without his presence is undesirable at best, a horrible reality at worst. We begin to understand that hell itself is hellish because of the absence of God. We begin to understand the heart cry of David after sin put separation between him and God: “Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me (Psalm 51:11).”

Over the past few years, it has become a regular prayer of mine that God’s presence might be with me, filling my thoughts, accompanying me. Maybe it’s a moot point since God is everywhere and has promised to never leave us or forsake us, but I do it anyway. I just want his Spirit to know that I’m eager for more, open, dependent, and aware of what it means if I’m not living in that reality daily. I don’t like to be taken for granted, and I don’t suppose the God of the Universe does either.

SONG:

We need to learn your justice
We long to taste your mercy
We ask your living presence to make itself at home
We know that you are near us
We’re humbled that you hear us
We’re trusting you to lead us on

Amy L. Clemens, Lead Us On, 4.1.20
