Every. Little. Thing.

SCRIPTURE:   O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. Psalm 139:1-5 NLT

THOUGHT: Perhaps this seems like an outrageous claim. And perhaps it is. But perhaps we serve an outrageous God and just don’t think often enough about how big he is.

Can God really know every little thing about me? Does he have time to examine my heart’s contours, at the same time holding the ways it’s been damaged by the world, the flesh, and the devil in tension with the good he has planned for me?  Does he know me so well that he sees what’s about to come out of my mouth before it actually does? Does he care enough to both go ahead and follow me, surrounding me with his presence?

I’m not an advocate for myopic focus on “my” faith – the whole counsel of God is far more about service and worship than self. But we can also err on the opposite side, forgetting that God sees and knows everything about me. It is personal with God. David the Psalmist doesn’t write this song from a place of selfish focus, nor does he write in fear or annoyance, a sort of modern-day “big-brother-is-watching” mentality. No, he is in awe, as am I, at God’s overwhelming love for mere mortals – at the amazing blessing of having God attend to us continually. Far from spying on us, God is living into his own character, keeping his promise to never leave or forsake us.

Jesus showed this divine nature in John’s gospel:  “No one needed to tell him about human nature, for he knew what was in each person’s heart (Jn. 2:25).” Simply amazing. Can you imagine the day when we get to know even as we are known?

PRAYER: Oh God, You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand (Ps. 139:5-6)!

  1. I have been reading in Genesis, the story of Abraham and the slave woman Hagar, and how he sent her away into the wilderness because Sarah told him to. As Hagar laid her child under a bush and went a distance away so she wouldn’t have to hear his cries as he died, the Scriptures says, “God heard the child crying.” That arrested my attention. The weak cry of a child in the wilderness could not have been very loud, but it came to the ears of the God of the Universe, who stooped down to rescue him. That is a God who pays attention to us.
