SCRIPTURE: Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3-4 NIV
THOUGHT: It’s become a buzz word recently, to be called the G.O.A.T. – greatest of all times. Culture is so finicky though, it seems predictable that today’s goat will be tomorrow’s bar of soap.
Jesus had an interesting answer to the question of who will be the greatest of all time in his kingdom where, ironically, the goats and sheep will be separated. It was his disciples who asked the question, of course, worried as they were about titles and success. He pulled a child in to their little circle and instead of talking about who would be greatest, told them they wouldn’t even make it into the kingdom of heaven if they didn’t become as this child: lowly, humble, trusting, needy, vulnerable, uncaring about titles and honor … simple.
We can make it all so hard, can’t we? With all our rigorous study, self-demands, and demands on others. But the truth is really simple, trusting God like a child trusts a good and caring parent is the way, the truth, and the life.
PRAYER: Oh God, we look for life in all the wrong places sometimes. Help us in our quest to become lowly, humble, trusting, needy, vulnerable, uncaring about titles and honor … simple.
