Small, But Mighty

SCRIPTURE: Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. Proverbs 30:34-38 ESV

THOUGHT: “Who dares despise the day of small things?” says an angel to Zecheriah as the beginnings of the rebuilding of Jerusalem are revealed (Zech. 4:10). That’s a verse that hangs around in my head as I walk the faith journey. So often, God surprises me with his upside-down kingdom, where the smallest and least are used in mighty ways. It keeps me humble, but it also keeps me encouraged that my own small offerings can be important in God’s economy.

Solomon observed small but mighty too, as he noticed how even God’s smallest creatures can amaze. That’s because God takes great pleasure in reminding us that even our greatest human strength and wisdom is no match for his creative power. Just a few verses before the Zecheriah passage, the angel says, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty (v. 6).”

Just a reminder for today to rest in the Spirit and the might and power of our great, big God.

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for the reminders all around us that small does not mean insignificant in your economy.
