Foolishness

SCRIPTURE: Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? Galatians 3:3 ESV

THOUGHT: It’s likely almost universal among Christians to begin by the Spirit and somewhere along the way, try to help the Spirit out in the perfecting department. Life is long in this way isn’t it? We wake up, and there’s another day where we need perfecting. And sometimes we’re just as focused on perfecting others as we are ourselves – how painful that is for people around us.

This morning’s reminder is that it’s foolishness to think we’re going to perfect ourselves or our relationship with God in any way except by faith in the work of his Spirit. And forget perfecting others! The way to perfection is paved with humility, requires patience, takes the long view rather than the shortcut, and finds when we’re left with nothing to give, the Spirit helps us in our weakness (Rom. 8:26).

PRAYER: Oh God, forgive us for the lack of faith we display toward you and your Spirit when we attempt self-perfection. Help us be better today at resting in your presence, and relying on our faith in you to cover and redeem us.
