Kissing the Waves

SCRIPTURE: I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. – Jesus, John 16:33 ESV

QUOTE: I’ve learned to kiss the waves that throw me up against the Rock of Ages. – Charles Spurgeon

THOUGHT: I love the ocean – but over the years I’ve gained a healthy respect for its power. There are waves, and there are Waves. Some can rock you, but some can throw you against the rocks. Just the thought of it hurts. I had a friend share this Spurgeon quote with me awhile ago and it stayed with me. The metaphor of kissing the waves that pitch us the hardest is beautiful. A look back often reveals that they’ve pitched us up against the Rock of Ages, and there, we’ve found peace in the midst of the tribulation.

Jesus is the only one who’s truly overcome the world, and thus the only one capable of leading the way home. So I’ll kiss the waves today, land on the Rock, and follow on toward that world in which there are no more waves: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more (Rev. 21:1).

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for the peace that comes to us through your son, who overcame death, hell, the grave, and the world. Help us learn to kiss the waves of tribulation that throw us up against him, for he alone is able to do more than we ask or imagine.
