Agape

SCRIPTURE: But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. Luke 15:20 ESV

THOUGHT: Jesus’ parable of the lost son has many lessons to offer, but the one that speaks most to me is the picture of a father (our Father) running toward his child with open arms, waiting to crush him to him in an embrace that says ‘you are more than the sum of your past mistakes.’

Well, actually that was a line from a song (You Are More) by Tenth Avenue North, and it’s a perfect lyric about agape love:

‘Cause this is not about what you’ve done
But what’s been done for you
This is not about where you’ve been
But where your brokenness brings you to

You are more than the choices that you’ve made
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes
You are more than the problems you create
You’ve been remade

Such love is hard to grasp, isn’t it? A perfect love that sees our sin, but is able to look past it to the work of the sinless Savior, and the work of a Mighty God who knows everything about the way he made us and his powerful plan for our lives.

For today, rather than getting caught up in all the theology, remember the picture of a father running toward his lost child with open arms – because that is how God describes himself.

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for your agape for us, whether we’re lost or found.
