Darkness & Light

SCRIPTURE: Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Eph 5:11-14 ESV

THOUGHT: We don’t really like black and white thinking. Most of us have been schooled in an era when the grey area between right and wrong has been growing – far more than 50 shades – and the lines between truth and lies blurred. Getting used to the dark is the phrase I’ve heard, and it’s cringe-worthy, but I think it’s an accurate description.

Paul told the Ephesians already 2000 years ago that exposing the works of darkness to light was the solution, because when anything becomes visible it is light. That’s a strange turn of phrase, but it means that when we are faithful to be that light of the world that Jesus asked us to be (Matthew 5:14-16), we, unconsciously even, expose works of darkness to light. Those involved in unfruitful works have a light turned on them and have to reckon with the brightness. They have a choice to make. But as long as they can remain in darkness, they can go on thinking that everything is just fine with their scheme.

People know in their hearts the difference between right and wrong, but as long as there is no exposure and no light, they can pretend, so, go on and be light to the world around you today – someone God loves needs exposure.

PRAYER: Oh God, help us be light to the world you love and came to redeem.
