It’s been a long time since I wrote, but today I found a quote from a spiritual hero of mine and thought I’d share it. His name was Robert Webber and he wrote many books on worship and spiritual life, and even one slim volume contrasting the Christian worldview with others. That one, I’ve about worn out! He also started a graduate school, Institute of Worship Studies, that I aspired to attend but was ultimately unable. Still, he remains a hero to me for his clarity of thought and heart so centered on Jesus. Maybe you’ll appreciate this quote too as you navigate the ups and downs of daily life.
“The monastic concept of stability translated into our spiritual life means “stay in your baptism.” . . . “A long obedience in the same direction.” . . . The spiritual life is not an escape from life but an affirmation of God’s way of life in the struggles we meet in our personal thoughts, in the relationships we have in the family, among our neighbors, at work, and in our leisure. This Christian life is an embodied life. It affirms that all of life belongs to God, and God is everywhere in life. We can choose to be stable following Jesus in all places, at all times, among all situations, and among all people.” — Robert Webber, The Divine Embrace: Recovering the Passionate Spiritual Life (Grand Rapids: Baker Books, 2006), 201-202.

Eugene Petersen, author of The Message Bible, wrote a book using that quote: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society. When Jim Frech was our pastor, he quotes from it frequently. I hadn’t know where the quote originated. Thanks for sharing that!
