The Little Things: Sunshine

Day 1, Saturday, November 16

Read:Psalm 19

In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. (vv. 4-5)

The sun is God’s handiwork and he does all things well.

As the days grow colder here in Tennessee, we still love coffee and prayer on the deck first thing. Watching the sky awaken with early light – reds and oranges that slowly disappear into blue – is a treasure. When the first spot of sunshine hits, I am amazed all over again at the immediate warmth it provides. David’s imagination of the sun like a bridegroom and a strong man running his course with joy is beautiful.

Perhaps it seems overly simple to stop and enjoy a ray of sunshine, but we can also take such little things for granted, turning instead to lesser things that seem more pressing, like the morning news. But moments stolen from the rush of life are important. As the world has become increasing complicated and dark in the past few years, taking time to experience the little things has been like a lifeline. These are the things God set in motion with creation, and they give me a peak into the steadiness and stability of His world and work.

If sitting and appreciating the glory of God in the heavens, listening to the sky proclaim and pour out speech and reveal knowledge is somehow trivial, then I can be convicted of loving trivia, and hopefully you can too.

As you pray, ask God’s help to see his glory in the little things.
