The Little Things: New Beginnings

Day 2, Sunday, November 17

Read:Isaiah 43:16-21

Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. (v. 19)

Change can be rough. Sometimes as an act of will you have to set the “former things” aside in order to stay present to what God is doing now. When you move, for example, the weariness of packing, paring down, making a million decisions, and then saying goodbye can wear you down. The excitement you felt when you made the decision is dulled by reality.

Of course, moving is only one of many challenges life throws our way! I learned a long time ago that sometimes God rebuilds – and sometimes he starts over. We have to fall into step beside him whichever work he is doing.

The good news is, as you process your losses and let them go, resting in his goodness, you see life springing up where there was nothing before. By God’s grace, you begin to perceive part of his plan in bringing you on this journey. Instead of rebuilding on rubble, he is doing something new. God’s great creativity is making a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. You’ve been empty and tired, but now there is a smoother road with a long, cool drink of fresh water.

God is experienced at new beginnings, and that is a joy to remember.

As you pray, ask God to help you trust he will make a way when you face something new.
