Day 3, Monday, November 18
Read:John 12:23-32
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. (v. 24)
God makes all things beautiful in their time and, each year I believe he has outdone himself when I watch, again, those little seeds with wings. Graceful twirls and swirls take them toward their destination, often floating on a delicious autumn breeze. Not only are they captivating, their seemingly random journey is filled with purpose. Whether dandelion, cattail, maple, or milkweed, they travel along seeking a hospitable spot to be planted. Watching them fly is one of life’s little joys and makes my appreciation for God’s incredible creativity and attention to detail grow.
Despite their diversity, most seeds have one thing in common: they are destined to be hidden in the earth and there die in order to live again and bear fruit.
With great diversity in skin color, ethnicity, talent, size, age, and circumstance, we are like seeds with wings, floating to all kinds of places where, after landing, we can sometimes feel like we are dying, then in God’s power, find life again, begin to grow, and bear much fruit.
We might enjoy the invitation to fly more than the invitation to be hidden and go through some kind of death, but in the end, Jesus said the seed must fall into the earth and die or it will remain alone. Not his plan at all for your life or mine.
As you pray, ask God to carry your seeds on Spirit wind to a place of fruitfulness.
