The Little Things: Children

Day 8, Saturday, November 23

Read:Luke 18:1-17

Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. (v. 16)

Our adult selves sometimes leave childhood too far behind. We want to forget the raw vulnerability of needing to be cared for, loved, sustained and protected. On the other hand, we can also forget the freedom to be found in care-less-ness. Unencumbered, a child may enjoy hours of simply jumping in a pile of leaves, looking up at clouds or stars, or examining ants or spiders’ webs with amazement. Running and spinning and climbing and jumping all bring a joy that can elude those of us with bigger, older bodies!

God desires us to bring these traits to our relationship with him. We cannot afford to completely forget what it’s like to be small, for we will always be small compared to him. We forget our vulnerability and kill our simplicity at our own peril, for, with God, those are necessary; every hour of every day we must trust him to meet our daily needs for food, love, forgiveness, and protection – and those are the small things!

Remembering the freedom and wide-eyed wonder of childhood is likewise incredibly important for our journey toward the kingdom of God, for without it we will stop exploring or asking or seeking or knocking.

Children don’t find it foolish to believe in God because they are so much closer to the place of needing, and welcoming, a savior.

As you pray, ask God to help you remember what it’s like to be a child, and what you need to recapture for life with him.
