The Little Things: Keepsakes

Day 14, Friday, November 29

Read:Isaiah 61

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. (v. 10)

I have a set of original Fiesta dinnerware inherited from my grandmother, mother and an aunt. Even as a child, I loved using those colorful dishes, and although their value continued to grow, I made a decision to enjoy them daily rather than preserve them as fragile financial advantages in a china hutch. Have some of them gotten broken? Sure, but they are keepsakes, used and enjoyed!

It can be a little that way with our salvation. Although it’s not a fragile thing, sometimes we treat it like it’s an event to be relegated to the past or to a shelf for safekeeping. Isaiah might say it’s a little like securing the most costly, amazing, designer labeled suit or dazzling dress and then hanging it in a cedar-lined closet and forgetting it. We trivialize the importance of the garments of salvation and the robe of righteousness to our everyday life.

Today’s thought is simply to remind us that these garments aren’t meant to be hidden. They are meant to be wrapped up in, remembered, worn, enjoyed. They’re perhaps the most obvious reason we have to greatly rejoice in God. Just for today use your sanctified imagination to see the beautiful clothes God has given you, then wrap them around you and go forth in joy. He’s got you covered.
As you pray, thank God for beautiful robes of righteousness and garments of salvation, keepsakes to wear, not relics to be preserved.
