What is Not Being Said

SCRIPTURE: You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere human beings? 1 Cor. 3:3-4 NIV

THOUGHT: This is one of those cases where you need to stop and take a look at what Paul is trying to say by what he isn’t saying. What he is saying is that you and I are still worldly, merely human when we get jealous, or quarrelsome, or practice one-upsmanship, contempt, sarcasm, or comparison. If you think about it, that means what he’s not saying is that he believes we can be something else – something different, something otherworldly, something more than mere human beings.

Wow. That’s worth thinking about. That’s something worth praying into. That’s something worth becoming.

PRAYER: Oh God, give me a view of what it means to be more than a “mere human,” to be so focused on you that I might seem otherworldly to the people around me. Not petty, jealous, quarrelsome, comparative, contemptuous, or sarcastic. Rather than following a human, help me follow you.
