Back of the Boat

SCRIPTURE: Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. Matthew 8:24 NIV

THOUGHT: Isn’t it good news that the Savior of the world could take a nap when his human body had worn out? And since the waves were so big they swept over the boat he was sleeping in, I’d say it was a deep, peaceful sleep (v. 24).

I need rest too. I’ve literally been going so many different directions that sometimes sleep has been elusive, and not deep. Seriously, I’m like a little child who’s over stimulated. Busy daily life piled on top of the roller coaster of culture spins me until I can hardly think. It seems a lot like a furious storm kicking up waves that are rolling over my boat. Unlike the Savior of the world, fast asleep and un-worried, I wrestle for peace. I wish it weren’t so, and perhaps Jesus would rebuke me right along with the wind, waves, and disciples, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid (v. 26)?”

All that to say my husband Fred and I are going on vacation next week. As much as I love writing every day, I think I need to be sleeping through the storm for a few days, trusting the Savior is also aboard, un-worried and in charge of wind and waves. I’ll be back by God’s grace, and in the meantime praying you’ll find God in the most extraordinary ways too.

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for the gift of a Savior who can take a nap in the back of the boat and trust you fully. What an example.
